Dental Extraction
Dental extraction in simple language means tooth removal. It is a procedure in which a tooth is removed from the tooth socket. It is usually done by general dentist or oral surgeon.
About
WHEN DENTAL EXTRACTION IS NEEDED?
There are several reasons for which patients need a dental extraction:
A deep infection in a tooth (abscess) or if severly decayed
Overcrowded or poorly positioned teeth or going for orthodontic treatment
Gum disease that loosens or damages teeth
Tooth injury from trauma in which tooth either gets impacted or loosens
Impacted teeth that are causing problems such as wisdom teeth (3rd molars)
DENTAL EXTRACTION PROCEDURE
Dentist will examine if the tooth extraction is the only way possible. Than your medical history is studied. In some cases you may be asked to take antibiotics before procedure.
Firstly you will be given local anasthesia to numb the area around tooth
Later the dentist uses elevator instrument to loosen the tooth in the gum
Than dentist will use forceps to pull the tooth out of the socket
For impacted tooth(3rd molar) dentist may have to cut a flap of the gum & remove surrounding bone and than remove the tooth with forceps
After tooth extraction dentist will clean the socket and give gauze piece on which patient has to chew for sometime to stop the bleeding
Lastly the patient is given all the instructions to be followed after extraction
BENEFITS OF EXTRACTION
BETTER ORAL HYGIENE
Wisdom tooth (3rd molar) are the last teeth to grow in the mouth as they are back in the mouth it gets difficult to keep them clean so its extraction reduces the risk of oral infection.
